Power supply to venues
Wednesday 21 September 2005 | posted by: Anonymous User

We are opening for business on October 29th 2005 but have been running some own in-house productions for tech. runs with full lights/sound etc etc. We have a Maximum Import Capacity of 95KVA from the ESB set aside for the Theatre. Can anyone tell me what is the average Max Import capacity that most Theatres would be working off. 95 KVA is costing us just to even have it set aside. Maybe we can reduce this ?
I would appreciate any help on this one.

95kVA is probably enough to run 36 fully loaded 10 amp dimmers.

Ok you're not going to have that all running at once but you need to have the capacity. I've seen lighting boards crash and put all dimmers to full. If you did have a 95kVA power supply and 72 fully loaded dimmers you'd make a spike big enough to knock out fusses down the line. It's really boring when you do an electricity poard fuse. It takes them a while to fix it and it knocks out a 3rd of the street. I know. I've done it.

dimmer wits

A fully loaded L.D. 90 or L.D.24 dimmer will use approx 60 KV or 2.5 KV per channel, split over 3 phases gives 20 KVA per phase at 4.2 amps per KV .This gives 84 amps per phase .Thats only one dimmer .I would recommend allowing for extra loading to allow for touring companies with extra lighting requirments such as a visiting power supply which is usually either 3x32a or 3x63a
